RI Cont. Art I, Sec 17, 1842

"The people shall continue to enjoy and freely exercise all the rights of fishery, and the privileges of the shore, to which they have been heretofore entitled under the Charter and usages of this state."

The court so recognized in identifying the rights of the fishery and privileges of the shore "that there must have been some such 'privileges' which were then recognized as belonging to the people and which the framers and adopters of the constitution intended to change into [rights] beyond the power of the general assembly to destroy." (Jackvony v. Powel, 67 RI 218, [1941]) (emphasis mine)

The RI Fishermen’s Alliance First Annual
Dinner & Dance Fund Raiser 2008

Special thanks are given to fund organizers Christine Loftes, Heidy Braton- Smith, and Connie Loftes. These ladies all, from well known fishing families, went beyond the call with their unending effort and work to make the fund-raiser a success. Thanks go out to all the others, both Alliance members and non-members, who contributed time and money for the Alliance and its cause. There were many who could not attend but made financial contributions and donated items for the auction and raffles. Political representatives from the office of U.S. Representative Patrick Kennedy and U.S Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, and RI State Senators Susan Sosnowski and Jim Sheehan attended to express their support for the fishing community.
RIFA President Richard Fuka and his wife Lori, with senior advisor to US Rep. Patrick Kennedy, George Sainyeh and his daughter Isabella.
RI State Sens. Susan sosnowski and Jim Sheehan.
George Lenihan, owner of Pancho O’Malley’s in Narragansett, provided the facility and prepared a spectacular seafood buffet for the event. The attendance was so popular that neighboring restaurant, Arturo Joe’s, extended his kitchen facilities and helped to prepare food. Much of the seafood was donated by Bergie’s Seafood Inc. of New Bedford and Town Doc Inc. of Point Judith. Following are a list of sponsors and special financial contributors to the event. Additionally, there is a long list of businesses and individuals that contributed to the auction, the raffles, and/or the event itself with their donation of prizes, goods and services.

Apologies must be extended to all the Alliance members and potential attendees who have expressed disappointment for simply being uninformed of the event or unable to attend. The tickets for the event quickly sold out maximizing the seating capacity of the establishment. Solicitation was then limited in anticipation of overwhelming support and attendance.

Two primary objectives have been set for the expenditure of funds raised. The first has been and remains the support of legal challenges now in the court system. The challenge to the RI Limited Lobster Trap Tag Plan is now before the First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston and the challenge for access to RI Commercial Fishing License Records under the open records law is now before the RI Supreme Court.

The second objective is to cover the administrative cost of membership expansion and improvement in membership communications to better inform members of their Alliance’s efforts. Growing numbers of supporters and widespread support of the fishing community is getting a stronger message across to government that the RI fishing industry is serious in their demands for better and more equitable management of the marine fisheries. Government must stop disenfranchising fishermen and their families as a routine exercise of fisheries management. RI state government must take the lead in adopting a policy which promotes opportunity and maximizes full utilization of the State’s resources.
